IT JOBS Requirements
How specialised can you be for today's Market.
IT is a vast field with so many sub leaves (as i would call them)
Taking for example a doctor..you have general practitioners, specialist in different fields same applies to the IT sector, you can be a software specialist, network specialist, systems engineer, and etc...
but hey!!! software specialist, you have different software programming languages, you can specialise yourself in a few languages not all like java, c++, php, c, visual basic, c#, ASP.Net, perl and the list goes on. So it all depends on the company for which you will work.
Same with networking, you can be a network admin meaning you have to know both system and networking.. system || microsoft /linux platforms|| Microsoft servers
Networking which will mean frame relay, leased lines, a bit of router configurations, switches, VLANs, layer 3 switches.... (Normally telecom configures all your frame relay routers and is under their management, same applies to leased lines)..
But Remember if you specialise yourself in something it is harder to find the job but you get better paid if you will be able to master it. But then you have to keep yourself up to date. Like software programmers you cannot stick to one language as the programming languages evolve.

Building Network Security
Having a DMZ is a must if you want to secure your network... What is a DMZ?? It is that part of your network in your organisation that you want people from outside (internet to get access) for example you are running a web server in your organisation you have to place the webserver in your DMZ as traffic from the internet is going to access your site... Then to prevent traffic to have access to access your LAN you keep your Webserver in a separate network Zone...
The DMZ is placed behind a firewall...
There are a few concepts how to place your DMZ.. One of which is to have a three legged Firewall (Firewall with three network Card Interface) or you have two firewalls..
See diagram below for an overview

New and Promosing Technologies
Web server: IIS6.0 is as good as Apache.. Lighttpd as light as Apache and more thread controls
VMware ..Virtualisation.. this works well. more than one server running on the same hardware.
good for DR sites.. doubtful for production site as this will require loads of resources..But seems virtualisation will take over the market soon.... VRRP.. Virtual IPs..
Software Based Routers..(XORP), Windows Server, Linux Server..... Go for cheap solution routers on your local LAN... no need to buy complex Cisco routers to create IP route NAT or access lists... go for Windows server install the router components and the trick is done.. For firewalling get free LINUX server and get a few network interface cards and get is to operate will the firewall package... Security made simple :) but not so simple :p
And Must Haves on a LAN:: If your LAN has over 20 Hosts then subnetting is essential.. Why???just to minimize broadcast traffic and add a default route for all unreachable IP :D
Security:
Cisco ASA (previously known as Cisco PIX) only difference is that ASA can come with more modules..IDS... and so on
Microsoft ISA 2006 :: Not Bad easy to manage and easy to get running
Watchdog
BaraccudaSolutions
Netscreen Firewall (Juniper Networks.. Cisco's Competitor)
